Charles Smith was an 1803-1862 publisher, engraver, map and globe seller whose style closely resembled that of his rival, John Cary. His 1804 publication, New English Atlas, was a model for Cary's 1809 New English Atlas. This reproduction map shows all turnpike roads and their distances from town to town, as well as local administrative divisions (ex. hundreds) which are indicated through different colors. Saxon-derived hundreds were originally an area of roughly 100 households. This piece is a beautiful representation of Herefordshire's geography and history in the early 19th century, and a landmark piece for any antique map collector.
